The train named for an echo was once Japan's fastest
In short: In 1958, the Kodama debuted as a revolutionary limited express service. It was the first of its kind in Japan, designed to bridge the distance between Tokyo and Osaka in a single day. Today, it serves a very different role as the Shinkansen's steady, all-stops heartbeat.
The name 'Kodama' translates to 'Echo,' a title earned in 1958 when the service first launched on the Tokaido Main Line. At that time, it was a high-speed marvel: the first Japanese National Railways EMU train classified as a 'limited express.' It achieved a significant milestone by allowing passengers to travel between Tokyo and Osaka in just six hours and 50 minutes, making same-day return trips possible for the first time. In 1959, a 151 series trainset achieved a global narrow gauge velocity of 163 km/h, demonstrating its immense power during that period.
The role of the Kodama shifted dramatically in 1964 when the Shinkansen bullet train debuted. While the 'Nozomi' and 'Hikari' services became the primary choices for travelers moving between major hubs, the Kodama evolved into the Shinkansen's all-stops service. It serves as a vital link for smaller cities along the Tōkaidō and San'yō lines, stopping at every station between Tokyo and Hakata. Because it stops so frequently, it is often used as an affordable alternative for those traveling with a Japan Rail Pass, as it avoids the supplements required for the Nozomi.
Modern Kodama operations involve a complex logistical dance. Because no single Kodama service runs the entire distance from Tokyo to Hakata, passengers must transfer at Shin-Osaka, often facing a 30 to 45-minute wait. To maintain the flow of the high-speed network, Kodama trains frequently pull into stations to wait for faster expresses like the Nozomi and Mizuho to pass. While the fleet now utilizes advanced 700 and N700 series trainsets, the service remains a testament to the railway's commitment to connecting every corner of the country, not just its largest cities.
