In short: The KTX-Cheongryong, or Blue Dragon, marks a major evolution in South Korean rail. Moving away from traditional locomotive-hauled designs, this high-speed electric multiple unit features distributed traction for faster acceleration. It represents a significant technological leap, blending passenger-focused comfort with the performance capabilities of the experimental HEMU-430X project.

The KTX-Cheongryong, also designated as the EMU-320, represents South Korea's second domestically developed high-speed electric multiple unit for commercial service. Unlike the older TGV-style trains that rely on heavy power cars at either end, the Cheongryong utilizes a distributed traction system. This configuration, which places power across multiple cars, allows the train to accelerate from 0 to 300 km/h in just 212 seconds, a notable improvement over the 316 seconds required by the KTX-Sancheon.

Development of the train was not without challenges. Initial delivery of the pre-series sets was delayed as engineers addressed excessive noise levels in the cab and passenger compartments. Hyundai Rotem implemented design changes, including modifying the pantograph and adding sound insulation to floors and ceilings, ultimately paying 19 billion won in damages for the delay. These two pre-series sets entered service on the Gyeongbu and Honam high-speed lines in May 2024.

The train's name, meaning Blue Dragon, was chosen by the public to align with the 2024 Year of the Blue Dragon. Beyond its symbolic name, the platform is designed for international ambition. In September 2024, the EMU-320 obtained Technical Specification for Interoperability certification, a crucial step for Hyundai Rotem to enter the European high-speed rail market. Furthermore, the second generation of these trains, rolling out in late 2025, promises additional refinements in ride comfort, braking performance, and passenger amenities.

Inside the cabin, the focus is on modern convenience. Every seat is aligned with a window and features amenities such as USB ports, wireless charging, and aircraft-style entertainment displays. The seats themselves can be rotated to face the direction of travel, and the train includes sliding steps to accommodate varying platform heights. With aerodynamic improvements reducing resistance by 10% compared to previous models, the Cheongryong serves as the foundation for future developments, including the EMU-370 currently under design.
