How a rebadged minivan sparked a competitive rivalry in Taiwan
In short: In 1999, a Mazda minivan arrived in Taiwan just two weeks after a Ford version of itself. This strategic move by Ford Lio Ho created a unique market battle where a rebadged sibling actually outperformed its parent's namesake.
The Mazda Premacy, unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on 9 March 1999, was designed as an affordable seven-seater. While it found success globally, its journey in Taiwan revealed a complex corporate dance. Since Ford Lio Ho managed Mazda starting in 1998, Ford released the Ixion—a rebadged variant—ahead of its Mazda counterpart, providing superior value and features.
The Taiwanese Ford Ixion MAV launched in 1999 with exclusive features like a Panasonic AV800 audio system and satellite navigation. Despite these advantages, the Ford version saw sales drop behind the Mazda Premacy starting in its second month. This mediocre performance continued until the model was eventually discontinued in 2005.
The vehicle's evolution saw significant shifts in branding and design. The second generation, released in Japan on 7 February 2005, was sold as the Mazda5 in most international markets. This model was built on Ford's global C1 platform, sharing components with the Mazda3. While it earned high safety ratings—including a maximum six-star rating from the J-NCAP in April 2006—it also faced challenges, such as a recall of 2,700 vehicles in the United States due to exhaust system fire risks caused by the manual shifting mode.
By 2015, the Mazda5 faced a changing automotive landscape. Sluggish sales volumes led Mazda to stop importing the vehicle in the United States and discontinue it in Europe. However, the model enjoyed a longer lifespan in Canada, remaining available through the 2016 and 2017 model years.
