The Japanese Thoroughbred who conquered the world stage
In short: Special Week was more than a champion; he was a symbol of Japanese racing excellence. From a hand-fed colt to a global icon, his journey from the domestic tracks of Japan to defeating the world's elite remains a masterclass in athletic progression and breeding legacy.
Born in 1995, Special Week was sired by the influential Sunday Silence. His early life was marked by hardship; his dam, Campaign Girl, died shortly after he was foaled, forcing stable staff to hand-feed the colt. Despite these beginnings, he developed into a brown Thoroughbred standing 16.1¾ hands high. Under the training of Toshiaki Shirai and the guidance of jockey Yutaka Take, he began his career with a successful maiden debut at Hanshin Racecourse on November 19, 1995, where he defeated thirteen opponents.
His rise to prominence was steady and calculated. In his second season (1997), he won the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) and secured three other graded victories. By 1999, his performance reached a pinnacle. He won the Hanshin Daishoten and both the spring and autumn editions of the Tenno Sho. Notably, in the autumn Tenno Sho on October 31, he set a new race record with a winning time of 1:58.0, defeating a field of seventeen that included several high-profile Japanese champions.
The defining moment of his career occurred on November 28, 1999, in the Japan Cup. Facing a formidable international field, Special Week defeated the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner, Montjeu, and other top challengers from Germany, Canada, the United States, and Britain. This victory was a landmark for Japanese racing, leading jockey Yutaka Take to declare his pride in being Japanese. After retiring to the Shadai Stallion Station and later the Lex Stud, Special Week left a lasting legacy as a sire, producing champions like the mare Buena Vista.
Beyond the track, Special Week's impact permeated Japanese culture. He served as the inspiration for the main character in the 'Umamusume: Pretty Derby' media franchise. His life story—from a vulnerable foal to a global competitor—illustrates the intersection of elite animal husbandry, rigorous athletic training, and the cultural power of sports icons.
