In short: In the high-stakes world of Japanese racing, few horses commanded as much respect—or caused as much chaos—as Orfevre. A Triple Crown winner with a reputation for volatility, this chestnut stallion proved that elite talent and an unpredictable nature often go hand in hand.

Born on 14 May 2008, the chestnut Thoroughbred Orfevre featured a white blaze and was bred at Hokkaido's Shadai Farm. He earned the nickname the "Golden Tyrant" due to a fierce temperament and a tendency to disobey his jockeys and trainers. Despite this volatility, his talent was undeniable. In 2011, he became only the seventh colt to secure the Japanese Triple Crown, winning the Satsuki Sho, the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby), and the Kikuka Sho.

His racing career was marked by both spectacular dominance and narrow defeats. He was a frequent runner-up in Europe, finishing second in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in both 2012 and 2013. In 2012, his Arc performance was notable for a sharp right veer toward the inside rail during the final stages, resulting in a neck-length defeat to the filly Solemia. He also faced a controversial finish in the 2012 Japan Cup, where he was bumped by Gentildonna and lost by a nose, though the result stood after a stewards' inquiry.

Orfevre concluded his career with a dominant eight-length victory in the 2013 Arima Kinen, racing before a crowd of 124,782. On 14 September 2015, he entered the Japan Racing Association Hall of Fame. Since retiring, he has served as a breeding stallion at Shadai Stallion Station, with a service fee of JPY 3,500,000. His lineage features the sire Stay Gold alongside his dam, Oriental Art, who was sired by Hall of Fame member Mejiro McQueen.
