In short: Standard high-speed rail often slows down to navigate bends, but the N700 series uses a specialized tilting mechanism to maintain velocity. By leaning into curves, these trains can sustain much higher speeds on tight radii, significantly reducing travel times between Japan's major urban hubs.

The N700 series, developed jointly by JR Central and JR West, represents a significant leap in high-speed rail efficiency. While the series has a maximum operating speed of 300 km/h (190 mph), its true engineering feat lies in its tilting capability. This mechanism allows the train to tilt by up to one degree, enabling it to maintain a speed of 270 km/h (168 mph) on 2,500-metre radius curves. Previously, these same curves were limited to 255 km/h (158 mph), meaning the tilting technology directly facilitates faster transit through winding sections of the track.

The evolution of this technology led to the N700A, an incremental advancement that further refined performance. Capable of navigating 3,000-metre radius curves at 285 km/h (177 mph), the N700A increases the Tōkaidō Shinkansen's top speed to 285 km/h (177 mph). Such upgrades noticeably benefit commuters; for example, the quickest Nozomi trips from Osaka to Tokyo now take only 2 hours and 22 minutes.

Beyond speed, the N700 series has undergone continuous technological updates. Since March 2009, these trains have provided wireless internet between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka. The fleet has also seen significant structural shifts, with the N700A series replacing older 300, 500, and 700 series sets. As of 2020, the N700S—a successor design with additional refinements—began entering service to gradually replace the original N700 series.
