In short: Spanning the Padma River, this 6.15-kilometer steel truss bridge is the longest in Bangladesh and features the deepest pile foundations in the world. Beyond its engineering scale, the project serves as a critical economic artery, linking the country's southwestern districts to the capital and promising a significant boost to national GDP.

The Padma Bridge represents a monumental shift for Bangladesh, connecting the historically less-developed southwest to the northern and eastern regions. Inaugurated on 25 June 2022, the two-level structure carries a four-lane highway above and a single-track railway below. Its construction was a technical triumph, requiring 41 sections and 42 pillars, with piles driven to a record-breaking depth of 127 meters to contend with the river's challenging hydrology. The project was managed by the Bangladesh Bridge Authority, with a design delivered by an international consortium led by AECOM.

The path to completion was fraught with geopolitical and legal hurdles. Initially, the World Bank withdrew funding due to allegations of a high-level corruption conspiracy involving government officials and SNC-Lavalin executives. Although the allegations were later dismissed in a Canadian court on technical grounds, the withdrawal forced the Bangladesh government to self-fund the project, which cost approximately Tk. 30,193.39 crore. This decision solidified the bridge as a symbol of national self-reliance, with the government utilizing its own budget to complete the infrastructure.

The economic impact is projected to be profound. Estimates suggest the bridge could boost Bangladesh's GDP by 1.23 percent, with further gains expected from increased tourism, industrial development, and improved access to healthcare in Dhaka. By replacing slow ferry crossings, the bridge significantly reduces travel time to major hubs like Khulna and Barisal. With daily traffic already exceeding 15,000 vehicles, the project is not merely a transport link but a catalyst for regional transformation, expected to generate billions in revenue and social value over the coming decades.
