In short: What started in 1986 as a small document delivery service in Virginia has evolved into a massive logistics network. Through strategic acquisitions and rapid expansion, the company formerly known as LaserShip has transformed into OnTrac, now reaching a vast majority of the United States population.

The company's trajectory began in 1986 when it was founded as Laser Courier, initially focusing on document delivery. During the dot-com boom of the 1990s, it transitioned into the small parcel business, even partnering with Barnes & Noble in 1999 to facilitate same-day shipping in New York City. This early momentum laid the groundwork for a significant expansion into the 'last-mile' transportation sector.

A major turning point occurred in 2021 when LaserShip acquired the West Coast-based OnTrac Logistics, Inc. for $1.3 billion. This merger created a transcontinental network, leading the company to announce plans to rebrand as OnTrac in April 2023. By early 2023, the combined network's reach had grown to cover 68% of the U.S. population.

However, this rapid growth has not been without controversy. The company has faced criticism regarding driver conduct, including reports of packages being tossed or driven over. Legally, the firm has faced several challenges: it reached an $800,000 settlement in 2014 with Massachusetts drivers over worker misclassification and was ordered to pay $597,000 in 2019 to New Jersey drivers for similar issues. Additionally, in 2014, it settled with New York City for $5 million regarding the delivery of untaxed cigarettes from Indian reservations.

Despite these legal and operational hurdles, the company remains a significant player in the logistics industry, operating sorting centers across 31 states and managing complex delivery networks for major retailers.
