The invisible toll of extreme heat and shifting climates

10 Most Devastating Natural Disasters That Could Happen In 2024 · 18:51 · Video: Insane Curiosity · Watch at the source

In short: While headlines often focus on sudden shocks like earthquakes, the most persistent threats in 2024 are slower-moving crises. From record-breaking heatwaves to devastating landslides, these events are reshaping human geography and testing our global infrastructure's limits.

Global figures from EM-DAT for 2024 show that roughly 167.2 million individuals were impacted by 393 disasters linked to natural hazards, which killed 16,753 people. While this death toll is lower than the 2004–2023 average of 65,566—largely due to a lack of massive 'mass disasters' like major tsunamis or significant earthquakes—the year has been defined by high-frequency extreme weather events.

Temperature extremes have emerged as a primary driver of mortality. Over 1,300 deaths occurred during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia in June 2024 when heat reached above 50°C. Across Asia, countries including India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh faced severe heatwaves; for instance, reports indicate 733 deaths in India between March and June alone. In the United States, preliminary estimates suggest over 1,000 deaths from extreme heat in Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Geological and hydrological disasters have also caused significant destruction. On July 30, 2024, landslides in Kerala, India, resulted in at least 359 reported deaths and left 206 people missing. Meanwhile, floods became the leading cause of death in Africa, with Chad reporting 576 fatalities between July and September. These events underscore a growing trend where localized weather patterns produce disproportionate human and economic consequences.

The economic scale is equally staggering. Cumulative damage from tropical storms in the United States exceeded US$100 billion, while total global economic losses for 2024 reached US$241.95 billion. These figures highlight a shift toward chronic environmental stress, where frequent, severe events continuously strain resources and human safety.
