By 2070, a third of humanity could live in Sahara-like heat
In short: Climate change is accelerating geological and biological processes that naturally take millennia into just five decades. From shifting hydrological cycles to the collapse of biodiversity, we are moving toward a world where 3.5 billion people may find their current environments fundamentally uninhabitable by the year 2070.
Climate scientists warn that the planet is on a trajectory toward catastrophic warming. A critical tipping point in global temperatures could be reached within the next 10 years if nations do not immediately move away from fossil fuels. If current policies persist, the remaining 'carbon budget'—the amount of CO2 we can emit while staying within safe limits—could be entirely exhausted by 2030.
The consequences for human habitation are stark. A 2020 study published in PNAS suggests that by 2070, approximately 3.5 billion people could experience average temperatures in the mid-80s. This would place a third of the world's population in conditions similar to the Sahara Desert, well outside of humanity's current comfort zone. Specific projections show Boston feeling like Bardwell, Kentucky (with summers 8°F hotter) and London feeling like Sovicille, Italy (with temperatures rising 6°F).
Beyond temperature, the physical geography of the planet is shifting. Melting glaciers at the poles are intensifying sea-level rise, while hydrological cycles are being profoundly altered. This results in a more volatile distribution of water, manifesting as increased frequency and severity of both droughts and floods. Simultaneously, these rapid changes are outpacing the ability of many species to adapt, accelerating extinction rates and forcing significant alterations in global ecosystems.
Furthermore, our infrastructure faces systemic threats. Alterations in weather patterns jeopardize the stability of energy production for both renewable and non-renewable sources. As natural disasters like hurricanes, wildfires, and heat waves increase in intensity, the reliability of the global energy supply becomes a primary concern for human civilization.
