A cosmic traveler from another star system has just passed by
In short: For years, we only theorized that objects from distant stars could visit our solar system. Then came 'Oumuamua. Now, a third interstellar visitor, 3I/ATLAS, has provided a rare chemical snapshot of a foreign world, offering a glimpse into the building blocks of a distant planetary system.
3I/ATLAS (also known as C 2025N1 or A1 PL3Z) was officially confirmed by NASA and the IAU in July 2025. It was first detected in data from late June by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). Unlike the first interstellar object, 1I/‘Oumuamua, which was cigar-shaped, or 2I/Borisov, which was the first confirmed interstellar comet, 3I/ATLAS is a comet-like body that actively released water vapor as it neared the sun.
By analyzing the comet's chemical structure—specifically the silicate compounds in its coma—astronomers used the James Webb Space Telescope to determine its origins. The presence of crystalline silicates is a key indicator; these minerals typically form in the inner, hotter regions of a protoplanetary disk. However, 3I/ATLAS appears to have formed in the cold, peripheral reaches of a relatively calm planetary system. This suggests it originated far from its host star, providing a unique look at the debris disks of distant worlds.
Studying these interstellar objects (ISOs) is a shortcut to understanding exoplanets. Acting as organic sensors for galactic motions and the interstellar medium, these objects exist primarily as remnants of planetary creation. Estimates by scientists show that these three arrivals date between one and several billion years old, hailing from various parts of the Milky Way's disk. They allow us to study the chemical composition of exoplanetary material without the current impossibility of sending spacecraft to neighboring stars.
