A new INTERSTELLAR object discovered! | Night Sky News July 2025 · 25:25 · Video: Dr. Becky · Watch at the source

In short: For the first time in human history, we have detected three distinct objects originating outside our solar system. The latest visitor, 3I/ATLAS, provides a rare chemical snapshot of a distant world's building blocks before it vanishes back into the void forever.

The discovery of 3I/ATLAS on July 1, 2025, marks a milestone in astronomy as the third confirmed interstellar object ever detected. It follows the cigar-shaped 1I/‘Oumuamua, discovered in 2017, and the comet-like 2I/Borisov, spotted in 2019. Unlike local bodies that orbit our sun, these objects are 'cosmic interlopers' traveling from other star systems. The object was initially identified by the code name A11pl3Z before receiving its official designation. It first appeared in data gathered between June 25 and June 29. Automated scans from telescopes in Hawaii, Chile, and South Africa facilitated this initial detection.

3I/ATLAS is a comet-like body characterized by a broad coma of gas and dust. Because it originated elsewhere, it serves as a unique laboratory for scientists to study the composition of another planetary system. By analyzing its chemical structure—specifically silicate compounds in its coma—researchers can infer the conditions of its birthplace. The heat generated by our sun vaporized material from the surface of the comet during its closest approach. Scientists have spent a full year observing and studying this visitor since it was first spotted.

Data from the James Webb Space Telescope suggests that 3I/ATLAS formed in the cold outer reaches of a protoplanetary disk, a ring of debris where planets and moons eventually coalesce. Its silicate composition implies that formation occurred within a tranquil outer zone of a planetary system, situated away from the scorching temperatures found near the primary star's interior. This specific research was released as a preprint on arxiv.org while awaiting formal peer review. It focuses on how these objects provide an extraordinary opportunity to examine building blocks from distant stars.

The object is currently on its way out of our solar system after passing the orbit of Jupiter. Once it slips back into deep space, it will never be seen by humanity again, making this brief window of observation critical for understanding the diversity of celestial materials across the galaxy. The object has already moved past the orbit of Jupiter in its journey toward deep space. This brief encounter allows experts to analyze the composition of a body that is now departing forever.
