How astronauts monitor muscle loss while living in microgravity

Andreas Mogensen: MARES sessions · 4:09 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: This timelapse captures ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen and Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergei Volkov managing the MARES system. Over three days, they unpack, set up, and test this specialized machine inside the Columbus laboratory to track how muscles behave during spaceflight.

The Muscle Atrophy Research and Exercise System, known as MARES, is a three-in-one machine designed to monitor muscle activity during exercise. Because muscle strength decreases during spaceflight, understanding these physiological changes is essential for preparing for long-duration missions and ensuring the safety of space tourism. During his ten-day IRISS mission, which began on 2 September 2015, Mogensen utilized the MARES system within the International Space Station's Columbus laboratory to gather these vital measurements.
