Europe's new workhorse aims to secure independent access to space

In short: The Ariane 6 is more than just a rocket; it is Europe's strategic bet on space sovereignty. Designed to boost annual launch capacity from seven to eleven missions, this new launcher aims to slash costs and ensure the continent remains a dominant force in the global launcher services market.

Developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and CNES, the Ariane 6 is a two-stage expendable launch system manufactured by a consortium led by ArianeGroup. The project is a massive collaborative effort, with France providing 55.3% of the contribution, followed by Germany at 21% and Italy at 7.6%.

The rocket family features two distinct configurations. Equipped with two P120C solid rocket boosters, the Ariane 62 model focuses mainly on government and scientific tasks. The more powerful Ariane 64 variant utilizes four P120C boosters and is designed for commercial dual-satellite launches. While the Ariane 62 can deliver up to 10,350 kg into low Earth orbit (LEO), the Ariane 64 can lift up to 21,500 kg into the same orbit.

The journey has not been without friction. The programme was first scheduled for a 2020 launch after being chosen in December 2014 instead of an all-solid-fuel option. After facing delays, the first launch occurred on 9 July 2024 using the Ariane 62 variant, though the mission suffered a partial failure when the upper stage failed to complete its final deorbit burn. Despite criticism regarding development costs and a lack of reusability compared to competitors like SpaceX's Falcon 9, officials argue the program is essential for maintaining independent access to space.

Technologically, the rocket relies on hydrolox engines, utilizing liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. The first stage employs an upgraded Vulcain engine, while the second stage uses the specifically designed Vinci engine. While the 40% reduction in cost per kilogram to orbit is a significant milestone, the targeted launch rate for 2026 has not yet been achieved.
