Witnessing a cosmic collision through the lens of virtual reality
In short: Imagine standing in the silent void of space, watching a spacecraft slam into an asteroid moon at 6 km/s. While we cannot physically travel to these distant systems, new immersive technology is turning complex orbital mechanics and planetary science into a visceral, firsthand experience.
Currently in its B1 preliminary design stage, the Asteroid Impact Mission (AIM) remains a proposed project. The mission concept was being consolidated for potential approval by the ESA’s Council of Ministers in December 2016. If realized, AIM would target a binary asteroid system: the Didymos asteroids. This system features a main body 800 meters in diameter orbited by a smaller moon, often called 'Didymoon', which measures approximately 170 meters in diameter.
The mission's primary scientific objective is to observe the aftermath of a kinetic impact. In late 2022, NASA’s DART probe was scheduled to approach the Didymos system and strike the asteroid moon at a velocity of about 6 km/s. AIM is intended to act as a high-resolution observer, using visual, thermal, and radar mapping to study the changes in the moon's surface, interior structure, and orbit following the impact. This would provide critical data for the larger Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment mission, or AIDA.
To achieve this, the AIM spacecraft would carry a complex payload, including at least three smaller vessels: the Mascot-2 lander provided by DLR, and two or more CubeSats. Beyond impact observation, the mission serves as a laboratory for deep-space technology, testing essential inter-satellite links and optical communications. This level of detail is now being translated into virtual reality, allowing researchers to experience the unfolding mission as if they were present in the vacuum of space.
