Can we protect Earth by striking an asteroid in space?

AIDA: Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment study · 5:03 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: This video explores the AIDA study, a collaborative mission designed to test methods for deflecting asteroids that might threaten Earth. By striking a binary asteroid system, scientists hope to observe how much an impact can alter a celestial body's trajectory.

The Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment (AIDA) study proposes a mission involving two independent spacecraft to test planetary defense strategies. The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory would collaborate with NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) on the project.

The mission targets the Didymos binary asteroid system. An impactor, built by APL for NASA, would strike the smaller secondary asteroid, while an ESA-built impact monitor observes and measures the resulting changes in the relative orbit.
