A 1 in 23 chance of an asteroid hitting the Moon
In short: The space rock that recently caused global concern is shifting its trajectory. New data reveals it may now pose a significant threat to our lunar neighbor rather than Earth.
Updated calculations from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the European Space Agency indicate that asteroid 2024 YR4 has a 4.3% probability of impacting the Moon on December 22, 2032. This assessment follows emergency observations conducted by the James Webb Space Telescope between March and May 2025.
While the immediate threat to Earth appears to have been avoided, the international astronomy community is now monitoring the object's potential for a lunar collision. The current trajectory suggests that unless unexpected gravitational interactions occur, the Moon is the primary target for this celestial body.
