A mysterious radio ring is challenging our understanding of deep space

Astronomers Found a Miniature Odd Radio Circle And It Makes No Sense · 16:46 · Video: Anton Petrov · Watch at the source

In short: Astronomers have identified a new object that defies easy explanation: an Odd Radio Circle (ORC). These enormous, faint rings are visible only at radio wavelengths and appear to have no obvious source. While most are massive, a newly discovered miniature version is forcing scientists to rethink how these structures form.

Odd radio circles (ORCs) are among the most enigmatic phenomena in modern astronomy. First reported in 2021, these ring-shaped emissions are detectable only via radio waves and remain invisible at other wavelengths. At their core, these structures usually host an early-type galaxy of hundreds of billions of solar masses, originating during a period when the cosmos was approximately 8–11 billion years old.

The discovery of J1248+4826 has introduced a significant outlier to this class. While typical ORCs span hundreds of kiloparsecs, this new candidate is remarkably compact, with a ring radius of only about 9 arcseconds—corresponding to roughly 30 kiloparsecs physically. Interestingly, while the ring itself is tiny compared to its peers (which range from 44 to 365 kiloparsecs), it is surrounded by a diffuse envelope extending to about 100 kiloparsecs, which aligns more closely with known ORC dimensions.

The origin of these structures remains an open question. Existing hypotheses propose they might be magnetized plasma leftovers from supermassive black holes expelled about a billion years ago, plus results from galactic group mergers, starburst events, or active galactic nuclei outflows. Some researchers even propose they might be traces of dramatically unstable stars shedding their outer layers through powerful radiation winds.

Researchers led by M. During an examination of LOFAR Two Meter Sky Survey data, J1248+4826 was spotted by Polletta. Despite its miniature scale, the structure shares many radio properties with larger ORCs, making it a vital piece of evidence for understanding these mysterious cosmic rings.
