A rocky world just proved it can hold onto an atmosphere

Atmosphere Confirmed Around Habitable Zone Planet LHS 1140b · 15:02 · Video: Anton Petrov · Watch at the source

In short: For decades, astronomers wondered if rocky planets orbiting other stars could actually keep their air. Many feared stellar winds would strip them bare. Now, observations of LHS 1140b—a world 48 light-years away—have provided the first confirmed evidence of a stable atmosphere on a rocky planet in a habitable zone.

The discovery centers on LHS 1140b, a rocky super-Earth orbiting a red dwarf star. This planet sits within the 'habitable zone,' the specific region around a star where temperatures are just right for liquid water to potentially exist on a surface. While scientists have identified thousands of exoplanets, confirming the presence of an atmosphere on a small, rocky world has been a monumental challenge due to the overwhelming brightness of the parent star.

Researchers confirmed the existence of an atmosphere by detecting helium slowly leaking into space from the planet. This finding supports a theoretical model developed by Collin Cherubim and colleagues, who predicted that the upper atmosphere of LHS 1140b would contain large amounts of helium. To verify this hypothesis, the group utilised the Magellan Observatory's Warm Infrared Echelle (WINERED) Spectrograph in Chile. The presence of this leaking gas implies the planet has managed to retain a substantial atmosphere for billions of years since its birth.

This milestone is significant because many M dwarf stars are turbulent when young, leading to concerns that they blast away the atmospheres of nearby planets. While the famous TRAPPIST-1 system has shown no signs of atmospheres for its seven Earth-sized planets, LHS 1140b stands as a primary example of a terrestrial-type world that has survived such conditions. It represents a major turning point in the search for life, proving that Earth-like temperatures and rocky compositions can coexist with the atmospheric conditions necessary to support life as we know it.
