A milestone in the search for life beyond our solar system
In short: For decades, astronomers have found thousands of planets but struggled to confirm if any rocky worlds actually held onto an atmosphere. That changed with a discovery 48 light-years away. We now have the first confirmed evidence of a temperate, terrestrial planet maintaining the protective shroud essential for life.
The discovery centers on LHS 1140 b, a rocky exoplanet orbiting an M dwarf—a small, cool type of star that is the most common in our galaxy. Located approximately 48 to 50 light-years from Earth, this world sits within its star's habitable zone, where temperatures are potentially moderate enough for liquid water to exist on the surface. While scientists have identified many rocky planets in such zones over the last twenty years, proving they could retain an atmosphere has remained a significant hurdle. Researchers detected the planet’s atmosphere by observing helium slowly leaking into space. This finding validates theoretical models developed by Collin Cherubim and his team, who predicted that LHS 1140 b would exhibit this specific signature of escaping gas.
Data collection occurred via the Magellan Observatory's Warm Infrared Echelle (WINERED) Spectrograph, located within Chile. Because the planet appears to have preserved its atmosphere for billions of years, it represents a major turning point in planetary science. This is particularly significant because some researchers previously postulated that planets orbiting small M dwarf stars might be unable to hold onto atmospheres at all. By confirming an atmosphere on LHS 1140 b, astronomers now have the strongest evidence to date that Earth-like temperatures and rocky compositions can coexist with stable atmospheric conditions elsewhere in the universe.
Dr. Oxford University astrophysicist Dr Becky Smethurst investigates our cosmic understanding, particularly concerning galaxy development shaped by supermassive black holes.
