A dual-orbiter odyssey to the solar system's most extreme furnace
In short: For eight years, BepiColombo has trekked through the inner Solar System. Now, it faces its final hurdle: navigating the intense heat of Mercury. This joint European and Japanese endeavor is about to perform a delicate orbital dance, deploying two distinct craft to study the planet's secrets simultaneously.
The BepiColombo mission represents a landmark collaboration between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Unlike previous missions, this project will see two separate science orbiters—the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (Mio)—circumnavigating the planet at the same time. This dual-orbiter approach allows for a comprehensive analysis of both the planet's surface and its magnetic environment.
The spacecraft is currently in a critical transition phase. On September 3, 2026, the Mercury Transfer Module (MTM) was separated from the main spacecraft stack. This milestone shifted the responsibility of navigation to the MPO, which must now guide both itself and the still-attached Japanese Mio orbiter toward their destination. To ensure precision, the ESA Mission Control Team recently monitored a successful 8-minute and 42-second test of the axial thrusters, achieving a trajectory correction of 11.4 m/s.
The timeline for the final approach is tightly choreographed. The composite craft is scheduled to enter orbit around Mercury on November 21, 2026, followed by the separation of MPO and Mio on December 9–10, 2026. The primary science phase is slated to commence in April 2027. These maneuvers require extreme accuracy, with several small trajectory corrections planned to ensure the craft hits its targets perfectly before the main orbit insertion.
The mission's success hinges on the ability of the MPO to manage the complex physics of a two-body orbital insertion while under the intense thermal stress of Mercury's proximity. By coordinating these movements, the joint team aims to unlock new data on the hottest planet in our solar system.
