Beyond matter and force: the mysterious existence of anyons
In our standard view of the universe, particles are either matter or force. This video explores a third possibility: a class of particles that defies this fundamental binary.
The universe is typically understood through two distinct groups of particles. Fermions, such as electrons and protons, constitute the matter that moves through space and time. Bosons, including gluons and photons, act as the carriers of fundamental forces.
However, physics suggests the existence of anyons—particles that occupy a space between these two categories. Neither classified as matter nor as force, these particles possess unique properties that could lead to incredible technological applications.
