Why deep caves are the perfect training ground for Mars

Caves 2013: Discovery · 4:48 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: This video follows the CAVES 2013 crew as they navigate the dark, cold depths of Sardinia's Sa Grutta cave, simulating the isolation and unpredictable conditions of a mission to Mars.

The CAVES training programme, conducted by the European Space Agency, places six astronauts in extreme environments to prepare them for space. For two weeks, the crew is separated from the outside world in the Supramonte region of Sardinia, performing scientific research and daily tasks as a group.

The experience mimics spaceflight in several ways: the darkness and cold of the cave system, the necessity of working together under pressure, and the use of harnesses and safety devices for movement, which is comparable to spacewalking.
