The small businesses behind the 'Seven Minutes of Terror' on Mars
In short: NASA’s most ambitious rover didn't just land because of government might. It succeeded through a collaborative ecosystem where small firms provided critical engineering for one of space exploration's most perilous moments: the high-stakes entry, descent, and landing sequence.
The Mars Science Laboratory mission, which deployed the Curiosity rover, represents a pinnacle of human engineering. While NASA leads these initiatives, the success of the mission relied heavily on contributions from small businesses. One such partner, ATA Engineering, played a pivotal role in designing and analyzing the complex entry, descent, and landing process—famously dubbed the "Seven Minutes of Terror." This phase is arguably the most dangerous part of any Mars mission, requiring precise calculations to transition from atmospheric entry to a stable surface position.
Curiosity itself was a marvel of scale and capability. Upon its debut, this craft represented the most sophisticated and massive explorer ever dispatched to Mars. Measuring 7 feet high, 9 feet wide, and 10 feet long (not counting the arm), the car-sized machine was built to house a suite of 10 scientific tools.
These tools allow it to perform sophisticated tasks, such as using a laser to vaporize rock spots at a distance and a drill to collect powdered samples for onboard analysis. The rover's long-term mission has yielded profound scientific insights. By exploring Gale Crater, Curiosity has identified organic compounds that may be fragments of fatty acids preserved in ancient mudstone. These findings are significant because researchers have noted that non-biological processes cannot fully account for the abundance of these organics. As the rover continues its journey—having reached a 1-kilometer elevation gain on Mount Sharp as of August 2026—it remains a testament to how small-scale industrial expertise can power large-scale scientific discovery.
