Why astronauts are training in the depths of Italian caves
In short: To prepare for the isolation of outer space, six international astronauts are spending a week underground. This video log from day three captures how cave exploration serves as a high-stakes laboratory for human behavior and technical teamwork.
The CAVES mission brings together astronauts from China, Japan, the USA, Spain, and Russia to navigate the subterranean systems of Sardinia. The goal is to simulate the rigors of spacewalks by testing how multicultural teams handle leadership, decision-making, and following complex orders in extreme environments.
Taikonaut Ye Guangu, the team's data engineer, demonstrates surveying tools and reflects on the parallels between cave navigation and space exploration. By the end of the program, participants aim to identify personal strengths and areas for growth within a diverse international crew.
