Why all parallel lines appear to meet on the celestial sphere

Celestial Navigation - Celestial Sphere Explained · 12:11 · Video: marineinsight · Watch at the source

In short: To navigate by the stars, sailors must master a geometric trick of perspective. This video explains how the celestial sphere functions as an infinite radius, allowing navigators to calculate their position using the altitude of celestial bodies.

The celestial sphere is treated as having an infinite radius in navigation theory. Because of this scale, any point—including the observer's location—can be viewed as the center of the sphere. This creates a unique geometric effect where parallel lines appear to intersect at a single vanishing point, much like linear perspective in art.

By understanding these principles, deck officers can determine a ship's position by measuring the altitude of celestial bodies. These measurements are used to establish a line of position (LOP), which is then solved using computer software or manual plotting on a chart.
