ESA executes the world's first targeted satellite reentry to ensure space safety

After 24 years of studying the Sun's interaction with Earth's magnetic field, the first of four Cluster satellites is returning to Earth. This mission marks a historic milestone in space sustainability by executing the first-ever targeted reentry to ensure any surviving debris lands safely in the open ocean.

The Cluster mission has provided critical data on space weather for over two decades, helping scientists improve forecasts for potentially hazardous solar activity. To conclude the mission, the European Space Agency performed an orbital maneuver in January to guide the satellite's descent.

By targeting a remote region far from populated areas, the agency has exceeded international space safety standards. This operation serves as a blueprint for future missions, demonstrating how to manage the end-of-life phase of spacecraft to maintain the long-term sustainability of orbital environments.
