How a fleet of satellites turns raw data into planetary survival

Copernicus Monitoring the Earth · 3:07 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: The Copernicus programme is Europe's massive Earth observation initiative. It transforms complex satellite imagery into actionable insights to help us manage the environment, mitigate climate change, and ensure civil security.

Copernicus operates by integrating three main components: Space (the Sentinel satellites), Services (which transform data into six thematic areas like land, marine, atmosphere, and climate change), and In-Situ (ground-based and sea-borne measurements). The programme provides freely accessible data to help with everything from tracking wildfires and reducing urban air pollution to supporting forest management and food security.

The initiative is a partnership between the European Commission and the European Space Agency. It relies on upwards of 30 satellites, including the Sentinel family. For example, Sentinel-1 provides all-weather radar images, while Sentinel-2 offers high-resolution optical images for land services. The programme was originally known as Global Monitoring for Environment and Security before becoming operational with the launch of Sentinel-1A.
