Why the ocean floor is more dramatic than the land

Draining The Oceans Is HARD · 6:56 · Video: minutephysics · Watch at the source

In short: If you could magically drain the world's oceans, you would find a landscape far more extreme than anything on dry land. Underwater mountain ranges are actually larger than our terrestrial peaks, and the deepest trenches dwarf our tallest mountains.

Visualizing the drainage of Earth's oceans reveals a hidden world of bathymetry. Because water covers over 70% of the planet's surface, our perspective on the world's topography is often limited to what is above the waves. When the water is removed, the scale of underwater features becomes startling. For instance, underwater mountain ranges are significantly bigger in size than those found on land, and ocean trenches are deeper than any terrestrial valleys.

The physics of this drainage is complex because it is a nonlocal phenomenon. To understand where the remaining water would pool, scientists use clever algorithms similar to the "paint bucket" tool in image editing software. These models help identify remnant ocean basins. In simulations where the water level drops incrementally by 10 meters, the water drains relatively quickly near the continents but lingers in the planet's deepest trenches.

The most profound features emerge as the water level drops below 5,000 meters, which is the point where the majority of the oceans have been drained. These include the Peru-Chile (or Atacama) trench off the coast of Peru, the Tonga Trench between New Zealand and Tonga, and the South Sandwich trench between South America and Antarctica. The eastern Caribbean's Puerto Rico trench represents a significant deep-ocean landmark within the northern hemisphere.

These visualizations rely on the ETOPO1 1-Arc Minute Global Relief Model, which integrates both land topography and ocean bathymetry to provide complete global coverage. This data allows us to see that the "Blue Planet" hides a structural complexity that rivals, and often exceeds, the geography of the dry continents.
