How satellite imagery reveals the layered history of Athens from orbit

In short: From the marble of the Panathenaic Stadium to the industrial sprawl of the west, high-resolution satellite imagery captures the complexity of Athens. These orbital views allow us to distinguish ancient landmarks from modern infrastructure, revealing how a city with over three millennia of history continues to evolve across the Attica region.

Satellite technology, such as the European Space Agency's Sentinel-2 mission and NASA's Earth Observing-1, provides a unique perspective on urban evolution. For instance, a true-color image captured by the Advanced Land Imager on July 2, 2004, documented Athens just before the 2004 Olympic Games. This view highlighted the city's diverse landscape, from the white marbled surface of the Panathenaic Stadium—renovated for the 1896 and 2004 Olympics—to the dense, gray-blue cityscape of the center.

The imagery also clarifies the functional geography of the region. To the west, industrialized areas are identifiable by sprawling buildings with broad, flat roofs, while the eastern edge is defined by greenish mountains. Further east, the Athens International Airport sits amidst agricultural fields depicted in shades of red. Even the maritime importance of the region is visible; the Port of Piraeus, located southwest of the city center, serves as Europe's largest passenger port, handling approximately 20 million passengers every year.

Beyond the urban core, these high-resolution optical images, like the one from Sentinel-2A on August 5, 2015, reveal isolated landscapes. This includes the island of Makronisos, an uninhabited, arid, and rocky terrain that served as a prison until the restoration of democracy in 1974. By utilizing sensors with resolutions as fine as 10 meters, scientists can monitor land cover and inland water bodies, providing essential data on how these ancient and modern landscapes interact.
