A cosmic explosion that defies our current laws of space

Einstein Probe Just Detected a Completely New Type of Cosmic Explosion · 13:45 · Video: Anton Petrov · Watch at the source

In short: Astronomers have detected a high-energy event so unique it matches no known celestial eruption. While its behavior mimics powerful gamma-ray bursts, the absence of actual gamma rays has left scientists scrambling to identify what exactly happened in this violent, fleeting moment deep in the universe.

During a standard survey, an incredibly luminous X-ray source was located by China's Einstein Probe (EP) space telescope on July 2, 2025. The event, designated EP250702a (or GRB 250702B), was characterized by two mysterious double flares occurring approximately 200 seconds apart. While the intensity of these flashes suggested a gamma-ray burst, no gamma rays were actually detected, creating a significant astrophysical puzzle.

The discovery is particularly striking because the Einstein Probe's Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) had already recorded steady X-ray emissions from the same location about a day before the primary eruption. This sequence—steady emission followed by intense flares—is rarely seen in such powerful cosmic explosions. At its peak, the source reached a luminosity of roughly 3 × 10^49 erg s^-1, marking it as one of the most luminous instantaneous outbursts ever recorded.

Current analysis from researchers at the National Astronomical Observatories of China and The University of Hong Kong suggests a dramatic possibility: an intermediate-mass black hole may have been ripping apart and devouring a dense white dwarf star. If confirmed, this would provide the first direct observational evidence of such a feeding event, offering a rare window into some of the most extreme physical phenomena in existence.

The detection relied on the WXT's unique lobster-eye micro-pore optics, which provide a wide field of view and high sensitivity. Because the source changed brightness so rapidly, it stood out immediately from typical cosmic X-ray sources, prompting a global coordinated effort to study this unprecedented celestial behavior.
