A cosmic explosion that refused to turn off

Powerful Burst in the Middle of Empty Space Has Finally Been Explained · 12:42 · Video: Anton Petrov · Watch at the source

In short: Most gamma-ray bursts are fleeting flickers in the dark, lasting only minutes. But one specific event defied every known rule of astrophysics by burning for nearly a full day. This anomaly is forcing scientists to reconsider what happens when stars meet their violent ends.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are among the most powerful events in the universe, capable of being seen from billions of light-years away. Two distinct events usually trigger them: when massive stars collapse into infant black holes or when neutron stars join together. Each catastrophe generates a concentrated stream of particles and radiation moving at almost light speed. If such beams aim straight at our planet, they manifest as powerful energy flashes.

While astronomers typically detect one to two GRBs per day, most last only minutes. However, on July 2, 2025, the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope detected GRB 250702B. This event was unprecedented; it persisted for almost a full day before fading. In over fifty years of study, no other burst has lasted this long, creating a significant mystery regarding its underlying mechanism.

The scientific community is currently investigating whether such events are actually 'classical' GRBs or something else entirely. For instance, the Einstein Probe recently observed an unusual event, EP240408A, which may be a jetted tidal disruption event—a process where a supermassive black hole tears apart a star. While these events can produce similar jets, they often lack specific radio emissions, leaving researchers to determine if long-duration bursts like GRB 250702B belong to this rare class or represent an entirely new astrophysical phenomenon.

Understanding these outliers is crucial for mapping the lifecycle of stars and the behavior of black holes. By analyzing the duration and intensity of these outbursts, scientists can better distinguish between different types of cosmic destruction.
