The scale of asteroid threats: from city damage to total destruction

In short: While many asteroid impacts go unnoticed, their potential for devastation is immense. This video explores the real-world risks of space debris, using recent events to illustrate why international cooperation is now a matter of planetary defense.

The 2013 Chelyabinsk event in Russia serves as a stark reminder of asteroid power; a mere 20-metre object caused significant damage to 7,000 buildings and injured 1,500 people. However, scientists warn that much larger threats exist. An object 100 metres wide—roughly the size of a football field—could potentially destroy an entire urban area.

Space agencies are actively working to mitigate these risks. Because many smaller asteroids are difficult to spot when backlit by the Sun, global efforts are shifting toward identifying larger, more dangerous bodies. In February, major space-faring nations began establishing a formal framework for coordinated international action.
