Earth's invisible shield is shifting and weakening

In short: The magnetic field that protects our planet from solar radiation is undergoing dramatic changes. From accelerating poles to expanding weak spots, scientists are using satellite constellations to decode what is happening deep within our planet's molten core.

Earth's magnetosphere protects against cosmic radiation and solar wind, but its global average strength has decreased by approximately 9% over two centuries. Scientists suggest this weakening may signal a pole reversal, occurring every few hundred thousand years. Since 2014, the South Atlantic Anomaly—where magnetic intensity drops—has expanded by almost half of continental Europe, according to ESA Swarm satellite data. This growth, plus rapid weakening southwest of Africa since 2020, hints at activity in the molten outer core 3,000 km below. These shifts threaten satellite safety due to elevated radiation risks.
