How a LEGO model simulates a comet lander's complex movements

ESA Space Scientist Detlef Koschny demonstrates the prototype LEGO® Philae lander · 6:51 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: Watch ESA Space Scientist Detlef Koschny demonstrate a LEGO Mindstorms prototype of the Philae lander. This model replicates the mechanical motions required to study a comet's surface.

Using LEGO Mindstorms, the prototype can be operated via a home computer to mimic the real lander's functions. The model demonstrates how the lander rotates and how its drill moves up and down to simulate the behavior of the actual Philae mission. This mission, part of the ESA Rosetta program, was designed to land on comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko in November 2014 to investigate its chemical composition.
