Astronomers discover the first ring system ever found around a small asteroid
This video details the unexpected discovery of two dense, narrow rings encircling the asteroid Chariklo. It is the smallest object known to possess a ring system, marking a significant addition to the five bodies in our solar system that exhibit this feature.
Observations conducted across multiple South American sites, including the La Silla Observatory, revealed that Chariklo is surrounded by two distinct rings. Before this finding, ring systems were exclusively associated with the gas giants Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
While the exact origin of these rings is currently unknown, researchers suggest they may have formed following a collision that generated a disc of debris around the asteroid.
