Inside the technical heart of Europe's space exploration missions
In short: This time-lapse journey takes you through ESTEC, the European Space Agency's massive research hub. Discover how engineers prepare for the vacuum of space and develop advanced robotics to extend human touch into the cosmos.
Located in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, ESTEC serves as the technical core for nearly all European space missions. The facility hosts roughly 2,700 employees working across diverse sectors, including Earth observation, telecommunications, and human spaceflight.
The centre utilizes specialized laboratories to simulate the harsh realities of space. This includes the Large Space Simulator, which uses liquid nitrogen to replicate the extreme temperatures and airlessness of the void, and the Maxwell Chamber for precision electromagnetic testing. Beyond hardware, researchers use tools like atomic force microscopy to study surfaces at an atomic scale. The facility also advances robotics, such as the Interact Centaur rover, which is designed for remote operation by astronauts in orbit.
