The conclusion of a 166-day journey in low Earth orbit

Expedition 38 Ships Off · 3:09 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: Watch the precise moment Expedition 38 concluded its mission as the Soyuz spacecraft undocked from the International Space Station. This footage captures the transition from long-term orbital habitation back to the journey home.

The video documents the undocking of Expedition 38 Commander Oleg Kotov, NASA's Michael Hopkins, and Russian cosmonaut Sergey Ryazanskiy. After spending 166 days aboard the International Space Station, the crew began their return voyage to Earth in their Soyuz spacecraft.

This mission followed the launch of the previous Soyuz TMA-11M rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on November 7, 2013, which carried Mikhail Tyurin, Rick Mastracchio, and Koichi Wakata to the station for a six-month stay.
