The final countdown: inside the pre-launch protocols for Expedition 37/38
In short: Before astronauts board a Soyuz rocket, they must pass a rigorous final review. This video captures the high-stakes atmosphere in Baikonur as the crew meets with officials and the press just days before their journey to the International Space Station.
On September 24, the Expedition 37/38 crew—including Commander Oleg Kotov, NASA Flight Engineer Michael Hopkins, and Flight Engineer Sergey Ryazanskiy—faced the Russian State Commission in Baikonur, Kazakhstan. This meeting served as the final hurdle for launch approval, which was granted on September 26.
The mission's scope involves diverse microgravity science, including human research, space physics, and the analysis of biological samples. The crew also monitors astronaut physiology to measure how space affects human body shape and size.
