In short: Before astronauts drift into the silence of space, they undergo rigorous traditional ceremonies and training. As Expedition 45 prepares for departure, the crew moves from the training centers of Russia to the launch pads of Kazakhstan, marking the critical transition from Earthbound preparation to the reality of life aboard the International Space Station.

The transition to spaceflight is marked by both ritual and intense technical preparation. Traditional rites were held at Russia's Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Star City on August 18 by the Expedition 45 crew. Members of this team included Roscosmos's Soyuz Commander Sergei Volkov, plus ESA's Andreas Mogensen and Kazcosmos's Aidyn Aimbetov. They were joined by their backups: Oleg Skripochka and Sergei Prokopyev from Roscosmos, and Thomas Pesquet from ESA. These ceremonies served as a formal prelude to their upcoming journey. Such rituals are a cornerstone of the training process at the Star City facility.

Following these ceremonies, the crew traveled to the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Their objective was to finalize training for the launch of Volkov, Mogensen, and Aimbetov, which was scheduled for September 2, Kazakh time. They were set to travel to the International Space Station aboard the Soyuz TMA-18M spacecraft. This mission cycle highlights the international cooperation essential to modern space exploration, involving agencies from Russia, Europe, and Kazakhstan. The crew's journey to the launch site marks the final phase of their readiness. This ensures they are fully prepared for the complexities of orbital life.

The mission's difficulty is highlighted by veteran spacefarers such as Alexei Leonov, the Soviet Apollo-Soyuz Commander and first person to walk in space. As the crew prepares for the physical challenges of microgravity, the logistical coordination between international agencies ensures that every detail, from the Soyuz hatch closure to the docking of cargo ships like the Orbital ATK Cygnus, is meticulously planned for the safety of the station and its inhabitants. The mission also involves complex logistical tasks, such as the arrival of the Cygnus cargo vehicle. This vessel is berthed to the Earth-facing port of the Unity module.
