Honouring space legends: A pre-launch pilgrimage to Russia's historic sites
In short: Before their journey to the International Space Station, the Expedition 45 crew visited iconic landmarks in Russia to pay respects to the pioneers of space exploration.
On July 8, Soyuz Commander Sergei Volkov, alongside Andreas Mogensen and Aidyn Aimbetov, toured the Gagarin Museum in Star City to examine historic space artifacts. The crew then travelled to Moscow's Red Square to lay flowers at the Kremlin Wall, a site where Russian space icons are interred.
This ceremony preceded the crew's scheduled launch on September 2, Kazakh time, aboard the Soyuz TMA-18M spacecraft.
