From orbital labs to literary workshops: Iowa’s reach for the stars
In short: While one NASA crew member orbits 250 miles above Earth, another student is learning to navigate the vast interior of human creativity. Two distinct paths of exploration—one physical and one intellectual—converge in Iowa, proving that curiosity knows no altitude.
On January 25, NASA astronauts Kevin Ford and Tom Marshburn bridged the gap between low Earth orbit and the classroom. While stationed on the International Space Station, they interacted with pupils from Davenport, Iowa's Putnam Museum of History and Natural Science. This interaction highlights a specific model of space education: bringing the orbital laboratory to local communities to spark interest in aerospace science.
The timeline of these missions reveals the transient nature of space residency. Commander Ford arrived at the station in late October and was slated for a mid-March return. His crewmate, Tom Marshburn, joined in late December with an extended stay until mid-May. These windows of time represent the brief periods where human presence in orbit becomes accessible to the public through direct dialogue.
Simultaneously, Iowa serves as a hub for a different kind of exploration: the mastery of language. The University of Iowa’s Writers’ Workshop—the world's first and highest-ranked MFA program for creative writing—hosts the Iowa Young Writers’ Studio (IYWS). This residential program invites high school students to study under graduates and alumni, creating a pipeline for future literary figures.
The impact of these programs is measurable in personal transformation. For example, writer Drew Ohringer joined the IYWS as an 18-year-old among roughly 70 students from across the U.S. He describes the experience as a life-changing where he first felt enthused by his own writing. The persistence of these students is notable; five who participated in the IYWS have now returned to the Workshop as graduate students, continuing the
