In short: Watch how Samantha Cristoforetti prepared for her journey to the International Space Station. This video tracks her selection and training as she became a pioneer for Italy's space exploration.

Samantha Cristoforetti was selected as an ESA astronaut in May 2009 and joined the agency later that year. Following her initial training's conclusion during November 2010, a July 2012 posting to an Italian Space Agency (ASI) project occurred.

Launching from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on a Soyuz spacecraft, her flight represents the second long-duration ASI mission and the eighth for an ESA astronaut. Notably, Cristoforetti became the first Italian woman to travel into space.
