A celestial traveler from the Oort Cloud is making its debut
In short: For the first time in documented human history, an ancient comet is approaching our inner solar system. This icy wanderer survived a perilous journey past the Sun's intense heat and gravity to become one of the most significant astronomical events of 2024.
C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is an ancient traveler originating from the Oort Cloud, a vast reservoir of icy bodies at the edge of our solar system. It was first identified by observers at China’s Tsuchinshan (Purple Mountain) Observatory and an ATLAS telescope in South Africa. Because it is on a highly elliptical orbit, this journey represents its first documented pass by Earth.
The comet's survival is notable because comets are remarkably fragile. As they approach the Sun, intense heat and gravity act upon their internal water ice and volatiles like carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. For instance, Comet Ison reached the inner solar system in 2013 but disintegrated during perihelion. However, Tsuchinshan-ATLAS survived its closest transit past the Sun on September 27, 2024, remaining more or less intact.
The comet is currently moving toward a close approach of approximately 44 million miles from Earth on October 12. Although it was detected during 2023 at a range of 7.3 astronomical units with a dim magnitude of 18, observers anticipate it will eventually be viewable without equipment. Peak visibility is projected for October 9-10, where it may outshine the brightest stars and develop a tail stretching across the sky as it continues to heat up.
For observers, the comet will be positioned between the constellations of Sagittarius and Scorpio. While ideally suited for viewing from the Southern Hemisphere, those near the equator should also have a good chance to see this once-in-a-lifetime spectacle.
