How a single year of space observation transformed our view of the cosmos

Herschel - One year after launch · 4:11 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: One year after its launch on an Ariane 5 rocket, the Herschel Space Observatory has already revolutionized infrared astronomy, offering unprecedented glimpses into the birth of stars and galaxies.

Launched on 14 May 2009 from Guyane, Herschel remains the largest astronomical telescope ever launched. According to SPIRE co-investigator Annie Zavagno and ESA Project scientist Göran Pilbratt, the observatory's infrared features have captured unprecedented views of areas where stars form, greatly improving our insight into galactic and stellar evolution.
