The planet that rolls like a ball through the solar system

History Of Uranus, The Coldest And Strangest Planet in The Solar System · 24:40 · Video: Insane Curiosity · Watch at the source

In short: Uranus is the solar system's ultimate outlier. While most planets spin like tops, this ice giant tips over completely, orbiting the Sun on its side. This bizarre orientation creates seasons so extreme they last for decades, making it one of the most enigmatic worlds in our neighborhood.

Uranus is defined by its radical tilt of 97.77 degrees. Its orbital path is nearly perpendicular to the equator, a trait unique among planets. This causes the planet to appear to roll along its path like a ball. Scientists believe this extreme orientation might be the result of a massive cosmic accident: a collision with an Earth-sized object, or perhaps several smaller bodies, shortly after the planet formed. Research from 2018 proposed that a world of double Earth's dimensions might have collided with it.

Such an inclination produces the solar system's most severe seasonal shifts. During roughly one-fourth of its 84-Earth-year cycle, one pole faces the Sun directly, leaving the remaining globe in a 21-year, lightless winter. Despite being much closer to the Sun than Neptune, Uranus is actually the coldest place in the solar system. Its atmosphere is composed mostly of hydrogen and helium, with methane giving it a distinct blue-green color.

The planet's history is as unique as its physics. Discovered by William Herschel on March 13, 1781, it was the first planet found using a telescope. Herschel originally thought it was a comet or a star. He wanted to name it Georgium Sidus to honor King George III, but the name was rejected internationally. Instead, German astronomer Johann Bode suggested 'Uranus,' following the mythological theme of naming planets after gods. It remains the only planet named after a Greek deity rather than a Roman one.
