The cosmic bowling ball: why Uranus rolls instead of spinning

Why Uranus Is Rolling Along Its Orbit Like A Barrel · 14:34 · Video: Insane Curiosity · Watch at the source

In short: Most planets spin like tops, but Uranus rolls like a barrel. With an axial tilt of nearly 90 degrees, it orbits the Sun on its side. This bizarre orientation creates the solar system's most extreme seasons, where one pole faces the Sun for years while the other sits in total darkness.

Unlike the rest of the solar system, where planets rotate with poles perpendicular to their orbits, Uranus is tipped over at approximately 98 degrees. This means its equator is nearly at a right angle to its orbital plane. Because of this, the planet appears to roll along its path. This orientation is so extreme that for nearly a quarter of its 84-Earth-year orbit, the Sun shines directly over one pole, plunging the opposite hemisphere into a 21-year-long winter.

Scientists are currently debating the violent origins of this tilt. One leading theory suggests a catastrophic collision during the early era of planetary formation. A research team at the Tokyo Institute of Technology used computer simulations to propose that a small icy planet—roughly 1 to 3 times the mass of Earth—struck Uranus. This 'grazing impact' could have flipped the planet over while simultaneously creating its idiosyncratic ring system and its 28 moons, which also orbit along the planet's tilted equator.

Other hypotheses explore different mechanisms, such as a double collision or a migrating moon. A massive satellite might have gradually inclined the world's axis across eons via gravitational pull prior to its final collision, preserving the lean while erasing all physical remains. Because 'mini-Neptunes' like Uranus are common in the Milky Way, solving this mystery helps astronomers understand the fragile architecture and evolution of solar systems across the galaxy.
