How NASA plans to photograph a hidden metallic world
Deep within our solar system lies an asteroid unlike any other. NASA’s Psyche mission is traveling to a metal-rich target that has never been imaged closely, using specialized technology to reveal whether this celestial body is a planetary remnant or ancient, unmelted material.
The Psyche spacecraft is currently on a journey to explore a unique, metal-rich asteroid of the same name. To capture the details of this unseen world, the mission relies on a sophisticated multispectral imager. Developed by a team led by planetary scientist Jim Bell of Arizona State University in partnership with Main Space Science Systems, this instrument consists of two identical cameras. Equipped with telescopic lenses and specific filters, these cameras will capture the asteroid's surface across various wavelengths of light.
This imaging capability serves several critical functions beyond simple photography. The data collected will allow scientists to construct a digital terrain model of the asteroid's surface, providing a three-dimensional understanding of its topography. Furthermore, the imager will help reveal the geochemistry and composition of the asteroid, while simultaneously assisting the spacecraft with essential navigation tasks as it approaches its target.
The scientific stakes for this mission are profound. Researchers are investigating whether the asteroid Psyche represents the partial core of a planetesimal—one of the original building blocks of the rocky planets—or if it is composed of primordial material that never underwent melting. By studying this metal-rich body, scientists hope to gain fundamental insights into the formation of our solar system and the nature of Earth's own metallic core.
The mission's timeline is already in motion. Following a gravity assist flyby of Mars on May 15, which used the planet's gravity to adjust its trajectory and speed, the spacecraft is progressing toward its goal. After its launch in October 2023, the spacecraft is expected to begin its exploration of the asteroid Psyche by 2029, with specific mission milestones for exploration set for around August 2029.
