Could a metal-rich asteroid reveal the hidden origins of our solar system?
NASA's Psyche spacecraft is embarking on a 2.2 billion mile journey to study a unique asteroid. This mission investigates a celestial body that may contain the metallic remnants of an early planet's core.
The Psyche mission aims to explore an asteroid hypothesized to consist of significant amounts of metal. Scientists believe this object could be composed of leftover material from the core of a planetesimal—one of the fundamental building blocks of early planets. By studying this body, researchers hope to gain deeper insights into the formation of our solar system.
To investigate the asteroid's surface features, chemical composition, and magnetic field, the spacecraft is equipped with specialized tools. These include a magnetometer, a multispectral imager, and a gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer. The mission features expertise from NASA JPL, Arizona State University, and MIT.
