Space is the ultimate delivery service for the ingredients of life
In short: The building blocks of life on Earth may have arrived as cosmic cargo. New research suggests that the essential chemicals required for biology were delivered by meteorites from the early solar system, providing a roadmap for where we might find life elsewhere.
Scientists are investigating the origin of 'volatiles'—elements and compounds that vaporize at low temperatures—which include six chemicals vital for living things, including water. A team led by Rayssa Martins at the University of Cambridge tracked the element zinc in meteorites to determine their origins. They discovered that Earth's zinc originated from two distinct regions: about half came from the inner solar system, while the other half originated from beyond the gas giant Jupiter. This discovery is significant because planetesimals—the small rocky bodies that formed the solar system's planets around 4.6 billion years ago—were not uniform. Intense radiation from the young sun hit the initial planetesimals. By identifying these diverse sources, researchers hope to understand how the materials for life were distributed across the primordial disk. This research suggests that the 'ingredients' for life were not just local accidents but were scattered across the solar system by fractured remains of early 'unmelted asteroids.' Understanding these delivery mechanisms helps refine the search for extraterrestrial life. While we already have the capability to leave Earth, surviving in space requires recreating these vital environmental support systems. By studying how these ingredients—like carbon, which forms the backbone of proteins and fats, and water, which acts as a universal solvent—interact in space, we can better identify habitable environments on moons like Jupiter's Europa or distant exoplanets like Kepler 186-f.
